Appalachian State heads into Friday's matchup against Coastal Carolina knowing that another defeat could make its path through the Sun Belt Conference considerably more difficult.
After opening the 2026 season with three consecutive victories, the Mountaineers have suffered back-to-back losses to NC State and Old Dominion. Their 10-3 defeat to Old Dominion was particularly concerning, as the offense managed just 158 total yards and failed to score a touchdown.
Now sitting at 3-2 overall and 0-1 in conference play, App State needs a response. Another loss would leave head coach Dowell Loggains facing even greater questions about his team's consistency and ability to compete against conference opponents.
CONFERENCE STANDINGS CANNOT BE IGNORED
The importance of Friday's contest goes beyond ending a losing streak. Every conference game can influence a team's position in the Sun Belt standings and its chances of remaining competitive in the race for the conference championship.
With James Madison also on the upcoming schedule, App State cannot afford to allow its early-season momentum to disappear. Losing consecutive conference games would increase the pressure on the Mountaineers to recover ground against opponents who are equally determined to improve their standings.
A victory over Coastal Carolina would give App State an important boost and provide a foundation for rebuilding confidence.
THE OFFENSE MUST FIND ANSWERS
App State's offensive struggles are becoming increasingly difficult to overlook. Quarterback Malachi Singleton endured a difficult outing against Old Dominion, completing just five of 23 passes for 72 yards and an interception.
The Mountaineers must improve their passing efficiency, protect the quarterback and establish a more reliable rushing attack. Offensive coordinator Mike Anthony and Loggains need to find ways to create easier opportunities for their playmakers.
If App State produces another inefficient offensive performance, even a strong defensive showing might not be enough to secure victory.
A TEST OF CHARACTER AND COACHING
Consecutive defeats can challenge a team's confidence, but they also provide an opportunity to demonstrate resilience. Loggains must show that his coaching staff can identify weaknesses, make adjustments and prepare the players to respond.
Coastal Carolina will not make things easy. The Chanticleers are coming off a 27-21 victory over Marshall and will be looking to build on that result at home.
App State must therefore begin strongly, protect possession and avoid allowing the home side to dictate the tempo.
A WIN COULD CHANGE THE MOMENTUM
Friday's game is an opportunity for the Mountaineers to stop their slide before it becomes a bigger problem.
App State does not need a perfect performance, but it needs visible improvement, greater offensive discipline and a winning result. Another defeat would deepen concerns about the team's direction, while a victory could restore belief and put the Mountaineers back on track.
