IS DOWELL LOGGAINS' OFFENSIVE SYSTEM SUITED TO APP STATE'S PERSONNEL?

Appalachian State's 10-3 defeat to Old Dominion has raised an important question about the Mountaineers' offensive identity: does head coach Dowell Loggains have the right system to maximise the talent available to his team?

The Mountaineers began the 2026 season with three consecutive victories, scoring 55 points against Maine and producing 345 total yards against Charlotte. However, their offensive production has declined sharply over their last two games, culminating in a disappointing performance against Old Dominion.

App State managed just 158 total yards in the defeat. The contrast between its early performances and Saturday's struggles suggests that the coaching staff must examine how the offense responds when opponents successfully disrupt its rhythm.

IS THE SYSTEM LIMITING MALACHI SINGLETON?

Quarterback Malachi Singleton showed considerable promise during the Mountaineers' opening weeks. He threw for 291 yards against Maine, 267 against East Carolina and 331 against Charlotte.

Against Old Dominion, however, Singleton completed just five of 23 passes for 72 yards, throwing one interception without recording a passing touchdown. Backup Henry Hasselbeck also struggled, completing two passes for minus-six yards.

The difficult weather conditions contributed to the problems, but App State must find ways to make its passing attack more effective when downfield opportunities are limited.

Singleton has demonstrated that he can produce significant passing numbers. The challenge for Loggains and offensive coordinator Mike Anthony is to create a system that consistently puts him in favourable situations rather than allowing opposing defenses to dictate the game.

THE RUNNING GAME NEEDS A BIGGER ROLE

App State recorded 92 net rushing yards against Old Dominion, with Jaquari Lewis leading the team with 41 yards on 10 carries.

A more effective rushing attack could help reduce the pressure on Singleton, improve play-action opportunities and give the offense a reliable alternative when passing conditions deteriorate.

The coaching staff must also examine blocking, play selection and how effectively the Mountaineers use their available running backs. Simply calling more running plays will not solve the problem unless the execution improves.

ADAPTATION, NOT NECESSARILY A COMPLETE OVERHAUL

The defeat does not automatically mean Loggains' offensive philosophy is fundamentally flawed. App State's early-season production demonstrates that the offense can be effective.

However, the sharp decline against Old Dominion highlights the importance of adaptability. The Mountaineers need quicker passing options, more consistent protection, better third-down execution and a clearer plan for dealing with aggressive defensive pressure.

Loggains must work with Anthony and the offensive staff to determine whether the current approach suits the team's personnel or requires meaningful adjustments.

The biggest question is not whether App State should abandon its offensive identity, but whether its coaching staff can make that identity work against different defensive schemes and difficult game conditions.

The answer could shape the Mountaineers' season.
