Appalachian State travels to South Carolina on Friday night looking to revive its season when it faces Coastal Carolina in a crucial Sun Belt Conference matchup at Brooks Stadium.

The Mountaineers enter the contest with a 3-2 overall record and a 0-1 conference mark after consecutive defeats to NC State and Old Dominion. Their 10-3 loss to Old Dominion was particularly concerning, as the offense managed just 158 total yards and failed to score a touchdown.

Head coach Dowell Loggains now faces an important test. With another conference game approaching against James Madison on October 22, App State needs to show meaningful improvement rather than allow its recent struggles to continue.

Malachi Singleton's Availability Is a Major Storyline

One of the biggest questions heading into Friday's game is whether quarterback Malachi Singleton will be available. He was listed as questionable on the midweek injury report after suffering an ankle injury against Old Dominion.

Singleton had been productive before that setback, averaging 301.5 passing yards per game while completing 72.7% of his attempts through the opening five games.

If he cannot play, Henry Hasselbeck could be called upon to lead the offense. Hasselbeck has already seen action this season, but replacing Singleton would place additional responsibility on the backup quarterback.

Regardless of who starts, App State must improve its passing efficiency, protect the football and find ways to sustain offensive drives.

The Running Game Could Decide the Contest

Coastal Carolina has struggled to stop opposing rushing attacks, allowing an average of 189.7 rushing yards per game entering the matchup.

That presents an opportunity for App State to establish its ground game and reduce the pressure on its quarterback. The Mountaineers need better blocking, more consistent runs and an offensive approach that can succeed even when passing opportunities are limited.

A productive rushing attack could also help control possession and keep Coastal Carolina's offense off the field.

Coastal Carolina Has Dangerous Offensive Weapons

The Chanticleers enter the matchup at 2-4 overall and 1-1 in conference play after recovering from a three-game losing streak with a 27-21 victory over Marshall.

Quarterback Deuce Bailey has thrown 13 touchdown passes against three interceptions and averages 268 passing yards per game. Running back Dominic Lee-Knicely also presents a threat, having recorded 362 rushing yards, including a 70-yard touchdown against Marshall.

App State's defense will need to pressure Bailey, limit explosive plays and prevent Coastal Carolina from establishing its running game.

Can Loggains Deliver the Necessary Adjustments?

App State's defense has shown an ability to create turnovers, recording eight interceptions through its first five games. That could become a decisive advantage if the Mountaineers can convert defensive stops into points.

However, the offense must provide greater support. Better third-down execution, improved quarterback protection and fewer turnovers will be essential.

For Loggains, the priority is clear: restore offensive confidence, exploit Coastal Carolina's weaknesses and give the Mountaineers a realistic chance of returning to the winning column.
