App State head coach Dowell Loggains faces an important challenge after his team's disappointing 10-3 defeat to Old Dominion. The Mountaineers entered their Sun Belt Conference opener looking to bounce back from their loss to NC State, but another offensive collapse left them with consecutive defeats.

App State managed just 158 total yards, recorded only nine first downs and converted just one of 13 third-down opportunities. With conference play underway, Loggains must find immediate solutions if the Mountaineers are to regain momentum.

Simplify the Offense and Adapt to Conditions

One of Loggains' biggest priorities should be building an offensive approach that can function even when conditions are difficult. Heavy rain and gusty winds affected the game, but App State struggled to adjust.

Rather than relying heavily on downfield throws, the coaching staff must develop a more balanced game plan built around short passes, quick decisions, screens and an effective rushing attack.

Jaquari Lewis led App State with 41 rushing yards on 10 carries. Those numbers suggest the ground game needs more consistency, better blocking and improved execution. Establishing the run would help reduce pressure on the quarterback while creating opportunities for play-action passes.

Help Malachi Singleton Find His Rhythm

Quarterback Malachi Singleton needs better support from the offensive system around him. He threw for 72 yards and one interception, while backup Henry Hasselbeck also struggled to generate passing production.

Loggains must evaluate his quarterback's decision-making, improve pass protection and create easier opportunities for receivers to make plays. Quick completions can help build confidence and prevent opposing defenses from consistently applying pressure.

The objective should not simply be to throw the ball more often, but to make every passing opportunity count.

Turn Third-Down Struggles Into First Downs

App State's inability to sustain drives was one of the biggest reasons it could not control the contest. Converting just one of 13 third-down attempts placed enormous pressure on the defense and prevented the Mountaineers from building offensive momentum.

Loggains must improve play sequencing, ensure the team faces more manageable third-down situations and encourage better execution on early downs. Avoiding unnecessary penalties and negative plays will also be essential.

The Mountaineers cannot afford to keep relying on their defense to rescue an offense that repeatedly fails to move the chains.

Build on the Defense's Strong Performance

Despite the defeat, App State's defense provided several positives. The Mountaineers recorded three sacks, 11 tackles for loss and three takeaways, keeping Old Dominion within reach for much of the afternoon.

Loggains must ensure that the offense complements those defensive efforts. Winning the turnover battle means little if the team cannot turn those opportunities into points.

Improved field position, more productive possessions and better finishing in the red zone must become priorities.

The Next Game Is an Opportunity to Respond

App State has now lost consecutive games after opening the season with three straight victories. The coaching staff must address the offensive problems quickly, particularly with another conference game approaching.

Loggains does not necessarily need to overhaul his entire system, but he must demonstrate that he can adapt, make effective adjustments and get more production from his players.

The Mountaineers' defense has shown that it can keep games competitive. Now, the responsibility falls on Loggains and his offensive staff to deliver a more efficient, disciplined and adaptable attack.
