If the final regular-season road swing felt like a long hike with a steep drop-off at the end, Saturday’s (February 21, 2026) matchup in Harrisonburg summed it up perfectly. The App State women’s basketball team wrapped things up with a 74-48 loss to James Madison at the Atlantic Union Bank Center, closing out the road portion of the schedule on a challenging note.

The Dukes came out swinging, building an early lead and never really looking back. JMU shot efficiently (49% from the field) and dominated the glass (30 rebounds to App State’s 16), turning second-chance opportunities into points while holding the Mountaineers to just 43% shooting. The first half set the tone, JMU led 38-27 at the break and the second half became more of the same, with the home team pulling away steadily.

For App State (now 11-16 overall, 4-12 Sun Belt)

It was a day where the shots didn’t fall as hoped, turnovers crept in, and the energy couldn’t quite match the Dukes’ home-court fire. The squad fought through fatigue from the back-to-back road games, but JMU’s depth and defensive pressure proved too much on this afternoon. Standouts like Elena Pericic and the usual suspects gave it their all, but the scoreboard told a tough story.

This drops the Mountaineers to the lower half of the Sun Belt standings with the regular season winding down, but the fight in this group has been evident all year, from snapping skids to gritty overtime wins. Losses like this sting, especially on the road against a strong conference foe, but they also sharpen the focus heading into the Sun Belt Tournament. The coach’s crew has shown they can bounce back when the stakes rise, and with postseason play on the horizon, there’s still plenty of basketball left to play.

Harrisonburg wasn’t kind today, but the mountains are calling the team home for a final tune-up before the real dance begins. Thanks to the players for grinding through the road grind, Boone appreciates the effort, even on days when the results don’t reflect it.

The regular season’s almost in the books and the climb’s never easy, but that’s why we love these Mountaineers, they keep pushing upward, no matter what.
