If Black Out and Stroll Night felt like a party where the lights were low but the competition was high, Wednesday evening (February 25, 2026) at the Holmes Convocation Center delivered just that. minus the happy ending. The App State women’s basketball team gave it their all in front of a spirited black-clad crowd, but Georgia Southern proved too tough, pulling away for a 62-48 victory in what was the penultimate regular-season home game for the Mountaineers.

How it Happened

The Eagles jumped out early, leading 16-9 after the first quarter and never trailing from there. App State fought back in the second with a gritty 17-point effort, cutting the deficit to 29-26 at halftime and keeping the energy alive. But the third quarter turned the tide, Georgia Southern dropped 22 points while holding the Mountaineers to just 10, building a cushion that proved insurmountable. The final frame saw more of the same: solid defense from the visitors, missed opportunities for App State, and a scoreboard that didn’t reflect the home team’s hustle.

Shooting woes plagued the Black and Gold (just 43% from the field overall), while Georgia Southern’s balanced attack led by efficient scoring and strong rebounding kept them in control. The Eagles finished at 49% shooting and dominated the glass, turning extra possessions into points. For App State (now 11-17 overall, 4-13 Sun Belt), it was a night where the crowd’s energy shone brighter than the offense, but the effort was there gritty plays, defensive stops, and that never-quit attitude that defined the season.

How it feels

This loss wraps a tough stretch, but with the regular season finale at home against South Alabama on Saturday (February 28), there’s one more chance to send the seniors off right and build momentum for the Sun Belt Tournament. The Eagles fly away at 22-6 (15-2 Sun Belt), but App State showed flashes of the fight that’ll carry them forward.

Even on a rough night, the mountains aren’t conquered in one game, they’re climbed step by step.
