Night at the Holmes Convocation Center on Saturday (February 28, 2026) was supposed to be the feel-good send-off: black lights glowing, seniors celebrated, and one last home win to carry into the postseason. Instead, Old Dominion turned the farewell into a tough 68-55 loss that left the crowd applauding the effort but wishing for a different ending.

How the Game happened

The Mountaineers (11-18 overall, 4-14 Sun Belt) came out honoring their graduating players with pregame flowers, hugs, and a roaring ovation, then promptly fell behind early. ODU’s defense clamped down, forcing turnovers and limiting second-chance looks, while their shooters found rhythm from deep. App State battled back in spurts, cutting the deficit to single digits in the third quarter, but the Monarchs answered every run with poise and pulled away late. The final margin felt wider than the fight deserved, but ODU’s size and experience proved decisive on this night.

What it means

For the Black and Gold, it was a bittersweet close to the home schedule. The seniors poured everything into the program, grit in practice, heart in games, leadership through ups and downs and the Holmes Center gave them the love they earned. The loss drops App State into the lower half of the Sun Belt standings, but the regular season is over, and the real story begins now, the Sun Belt Tournament starts Tuesday (March 3, 2026) with the Mountaineers opening play in the first round.

Tournament seeding and bracket details will be finalized soon, but App State will face a familiar conference foe in an elimination game. Coach’s crew has shown flashes of brilliance this year, overtime heroics, come-from-behind grit, and moments when the mountains seemed to push them forward. Senior Night didn’t end with confetti, but it ended with appreciation and a reminder: these players have left their mark, and the fight continues.

Now, Mountaineers focus shifts south to the tournament floor. One game at a time, one more chance to climb. The Mountaineers aren’t done yet, they’re ready to make some noise in the postseason.
