Malachi Singleton Is Giving App State Plenty to Believe In Through Three Games

ASF StaffASF StaffSep 20, 2026 · 2 min read · 3 views

App State is off to its first 3-0 start since 2019, and one of the biggest reasons for the Mountaineers' unbeaten beginning has been the play of quarterback Malachi Singleton.

Through three games, Singleton has established himself as one of the central figures in App State's fast start, producing strong numbers while helping the Mountaineers win all three of their opening contests.

A Highly Efficient Start

Singleton has completed 70 of 94 passes for 889 yards, five touchdowns and one interception through three games.

That gives him a 74.5% completion rate, while his 889 passing yards are an average of 296.3 yards per game. His current passer rating is 169.34, according to App State's official cumulative statistics.

His consistency has been particularly notable. Against Maine in the opener, Singleton completed 22 of 24 passes for 291 yards and three touchdowns as App State rolled to a 55-3 victory.

A week later against East Carolina, he threw for 267 yards and added a rushing touchdown as the Mountaineers escaped Greenville with a 27-24 victory. Then came his biggest passing performance of the season against Charlotte.

Career Day Against Charlotte

Singleton completed 28 of 42 passes for a career-high 331 yards and two touchdowns in App State's 26-21 victory over the 49ers.

He connected with Chris Lofton for a three-yard touchdown in the third quarter before finding Jackson Grier for a seven-yard score early in the fourth.

The touchdown to Grier capped a 74-yard, 12-play drive that lasted nearly five minutes and pushed App State's advantage to 26-7.

Singleton also contributed with his legs, rushing for 14 yards, and even caught a 14-yard pass from fellow quarterback Henry Hasselbeck.

One Mistake, But Strong Overall Production

The Charlotte game was not perfect. Singleton threw his first interception of the season late in the fourth quarter, and Charlotte's Collin Gill returned the pick 36 yards for a touchdown. That helped turn what had been a 26-7 App State lead into a five-point game. Still, the interception remains his only one through three games.

That is significant when placed alongside his 70 completions, 889 yards and five touchdown passes.

NC State Provides the Next Test

Singleton's numbers have been impressive, but the next challenge will provide another opportunity to evaluate his progress.

App State travels to Raleigh next weekend to face NC State, giving Singleton his next chance to lead the Mountaineers against another FBS opponent.

For now, the numbers are clear: Singleton has been accurate, productive and largely protective of the football through three games.

App State is 3-0, and its quarterback has played a major role in getting it there. The next question is whether Singleton can maintain that level of production as the schedule becomes more demanding.
