Appalachian State concludes its 2025 road schedule Saturday with a challenging visit to No. 24/25 James Madison, which has surged into both the AP Top 25 and AFCA Coaches Poll. Kickoff at Bridgeforth Stadium is set for 3:30 p.m. on ESPN+.

Series Rich in Drama

This rivalry has produced memorable moments whether dating to the FCS era or their recent Sun Belt encounters. JMU erased a 28-3 deficit in their 2022 Sun Belt debut, while App State answered with a 2023 overtime thriller in Harrisonburg on College GameDay. Last season, the Mountaineers rallied from 14-0 down for a 34-20 snow-game victory with Jason Kelce in attendance.

Contrasting Trajectories

The Mountaineers (4-5, 1-4 SBC) have dropped three consecutive one-possession East Division games: Coastal Carolina (45-37), Old Dominion (24-21), and Georgia Southern (25-23). Meanwhile, the Dukes (8-1, 6-0 SBC) carry only a September 5 loss to Louisville (28-14) into Saturday’s contest.

Defensive Excellence vs. Offensive Struggles

JMU’s defense allows just 16.9 points per game, posting dominant conference performances against Georgia Southern (35-10), Georgia State (14-7), and Louisiana (24-14). The Dukes were surrendering only 80.3 rushing yards per game before Marshall gained 248 yards.

App State managed just 77 rushing yards on 23 attempts against Georgia Southern, though quarterback AJ Swann completed 34 of 51 passes for 348 yards during a late comeback attempt. The Mountaineers’ three highest rushing totals occurred in their first three victories.

JMU’s Dynamic Offense

Quarterback Alonza Barnett III has accumulated 2,182 offensive yards (396 rushing) with 26 touchdowns (16 passing, 10 rushing) against only four interceptions. Running back Wayne Knight contributes 746 rushing yards and six touchdowns while adding 313 receiving yards on 29 catches, plus dangerous return abilities (22.2 yards per kickoff, 9.3 per punt).

Richmond transfer Landon Ellis leads receivers with 30 catches for 486 yards and five scores.

Series History and Stakes

App State leads the all-time series 14-5, including 6-2 in Harrisonburg. The Mountaineers are 3-11 in FBS games against ranked opponents, including 2-2 against ranked Sun Belt foes (2023 JMU win, 2021 Coastal Carolina victory).

First-year coach Dowell Loggains acknowledged JMU possesses the most complete roster App State will face this season, requiring a comprehensive effort across all three phases to secure an upset victory.
