DOWELL LOGGAINS FACES HIS SUN BELT TEST OF 2026

ASF StaffASF StaffOct 1, 2026 · 2 min read · 6 views

Appalachian State will begin its 2026 Sun Belt Conference campaign against Old Dominion on October 10, giving head coach Dowell Loggains an important early opportunity to measure his team against conference opposition.

Loggains is entering his second season in Boone after taking over as App State's head coach in December 2024. Before becoming a head coach, he spent 16 years in the NFL and later served as South Carolina's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

A NEW CHAPTER FOR LOGGAINS

App State entered the year with 66 newcomers on its roster, including 35 transfers and 29 December signees. The program also brought in what App State described as the highest-rated signing class in Sun Belt Conference history.

That means Loggains is not simply working with last year's team. He is continuing to shape a roster with significant new personnel while trying to establish his identity as a head coach.

THE EARLY RESULTS

App State opened the season strongly and reached 3-0 before traveling to NC State.

The Mountaineers eventually suffered a 41-31 defeat in Raleigh, but their performance contained both positive and negative lessons.

App State fell behind 21-0 but rallied to tie the game at 31-31 in the fourth quarter. NC State then responded with a 75-yard touchdown drive before adding a late field goal.

Loggains praised his team's belief and fight after the game, and that resilience will now be tested in a different environment.

THE CONFERENCE TEST BEGINS

Old Dominion represents the first Sun Belt opponent on App State's 2026 schedule.

The importance of the matchup goes beyond the result. Conference games provide a different measure of where a team stands because every opponent is competing within the same league structure and ultimately chasing the same conference objectives.

For Loggains, Saturday will therefore provide his first opportunity this season to see how his team responds when the games that matter within the Sun Belt standings begin.

A DEMANDING OCTOBER

The challenge does not end with Old Dominion.

App State's schedule moves quickly after the conference opener, with a road game at Coastal Carolina on October 16 followed by a home matchup against James Madison on October 22. Georgia Southern follows on October 31.

That makes the opening stretch of conference play particularly important for Loggains and his team.

THE NEXT STEP

Loggains has already shown that his App State team can respond when placed under pressure.

The next question is whether the Mountaineers can produce the consistency required across an entire conference schedule.

Against Old Dominion, Loggains will get his first 2026 opportunity to begin answering that question.

The result will matter, but so will the way App State performs under its second-year head coach as the Mountaineers move into the part of the season that will ultimately define their campaign.
