Appalachian State enters Saturday’s sold-out homecoming matchup against Coastal Carolina riding a wave of confidence built through consecutive victories over Oregon State and Georgia State. The Mountaineers (4-2, 1-1 SBC) will debut throwback gold pants, black jerseys, and black “Flying Yosef” helmets, the same logo worn from 1983-88 during the Mack Brown and Sparky Woods coaching eras, for their 3:30 p.m. kickoff against the Chanticleers (3-3, 2-1 SBC) at Kidd Brewer Stadium.

“I thought we had more of an edge the last two weeks than we’ve had,” head coach Dowell Loggains said. “Confidence is born through demonstrated ability. You have to teach teams how to win collectively, together. They’re starting to buy into the principles of playing smarter, harder, longer than our opponent.”

Hall of Fame Weekend Celebration

Homecoming weekend doubles as Hall of Fame weekend, honoring 2007 national championship teammates Dexter Jackson and DJ Smith. Smith, now App State’s first-year defensive coordinator under first-year head coach Loggains, represents the program’s connection between championship tradition and present-day excellence.

Fans are encouraged to wear gold and bring their rally towels from the Oregon State victory, creating a unified gameday atmosphere for the 14th consecutive sellout at The Rock.

Mountaineers Finding Their Identity

App State’s recent success stems from dramatically improved discipline, committing zero turnovers with season-low penalty totals in both October victories. Quarterback JJ Kohl, making his first two FBS starts with AJ Swann sidelined, has thrown five touchdown passes, accumulated 527 passing yards, and added one rushing touchdown behind strong protection.

The defense has limited both opponents to under 100 rushing yards while making crucial red-zone stops that thwarted Oregon State’s comeback attempt and helped build a 31-0 lead at Georgia State.

Coastal Carolina Presents Challenges

The Chanticleers arrive at Boone’s midpoint following an inconsistent season. Their three victories, all by double-digit margins including Sun Belt wins at South Alabama (38-20) and against ULM (23-8), contrast sharply with three lopsided defeats to Virginia (48-7), East Carolina (38-0), and Old Dominion (47-7), during which they were outscored 133-14.

“They’re a team that can beat anyone on any given Saturday,” Loggains acknowledged. “This is a good football team that creates a lot of challenges schematically.”

Quarterback Tad Hudson, who started last year’s Myrtle Beach Bowl, is listed as questionable after missing the second half against ULM. Samari Collier provided quality relief with 86 rushing yards, one rushing touchdown, and one passing touchdown. Running back Ja’Vin Simpkins has gained 205 yards on 32 attempts in Coastal’s three victories.

Coastal’s three-safety defense has generated six interceptions among eight total takeaways, including two picks each in victories over South Alabama and ULM.

Saturday marks the first Saturday meeting between these programs since 2020, after four consecutive nationally televised Thursday, Wednesday, or Tuesday games. Coastal has won four of the last five meetings after App State started the series with six straight victories.
