App State Faces NC State in Final Nonconference Test

ASF StaffASF StaffSep 17, 2026 · 2 min read · 3 views

App State heads to Raleigh on Saturday night looking to maintain its perfect start to the 2026 season when it takes on NC State at Carter-Finley Stadium.

The Mountaineers enter the matchup at 3-0 after opening the season with a 55-3 victory over Maine before defeating East Carolina 27-24 and Charlotte 26-21. The game represents App State's final nonconference contest before the Mountaineers turn their attention to Sun Belt play.

The matchup is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET and will be televised nationally on ESPNU. The game is sold out.

Singleton Leads an Efficient Offense

A major storyline heading into Raleigh is the continued development of quarterback Malachi Singleton.

Through his first three FBS starts, Singleton has completed 70 of 94 passes for 889 yards, five touchdowns and one interception. His performance against Charlotte earned him Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week honors after he threw for 331 yards.

The Mountaineers have also established a productive rushing attack. Jaquari Lewis leads the team with 188 rushing yards, while App State's top three running backs have combined for 336 yards on 72 carries. As a team, the Mountaineers are averaging 4.5 yards per carry.

NC State Brings a Different Challenge

NC State enters the contest at 1-2, giving App State an opportunity to test itself against an ACC opponent on the road.

The Wolfpack's offense features quarterback CJ Bailey, who has accumulated 6,158 passing yards and 46 touchdowns during his three years with the program. Receiver Keenan Jackson has emerged as one of the team's leading offensive threats, recording 15 catches for 231 yards through three games.

Running back Duke Scott has also produced 198 rushing yards, while NC State's offensive line features significant size, with multiple linemen weighing between 315 and 330 pounds.

Defensive Line Could Be Crucial

For App State, the matchup in the trenches could determine how effectively the Mountaineers handle NC State's size.

App State's defensive line has performed well during September, while NC State also possesses a sizeable four-man defensive front that will challenge an offensive line that has done a good job protecting Singleton.

James London provides another important piece for the Mountaineers, having converted six of his first seven field-goal attempts, with his only miss coming from 59 yards against East Carolina.

A Big Test for App State

Saturday's meeting is App State's first against NC State since 2006, when the Wolfpack won 23-10 in Raleigh. The Mountaineers enter this year's matchup 3-0 for the first time since 2019.

With an undefeated record, an efficient passing game and a productive rushing attack, App State will look to carry its strong September form into one of its most challenging nonconference environments of the season.
