After leading by just four points at halftime, the App State men’s basketball team (18-9, 10-4 SBC) opened the second half with a dominant 14-5 run and cruised to an 81-65 road victory over Georgia Southern (14-12, 6-7 SBC) on Wednesday. Combined with Troy’s loss to Texas State, the win moved App State into first place in the Sun Belt standings.

Jennings’ Stellar Performance

Kasen Jennings delivered a masterful 31-point performance, splitting his production with 14 first-half points and 17 in the second half. He became the first Mountaineer since Justin Forrest and Ronshad Shabazz in 2018-19 to record multiple 30-point games in the same season.

Jennings sparked a crucial run that turned a seven-point lead into an 18-point advantage by the final media timeout, scoring 11 points during the stretch. He ignited the surge with a strong drive through contact for an and-one opportunity.

Historic Milestone

The victory secured App State’s 10th conference win, marking the third consecutive season the Mountaineers have reached double-digit Sun Belt victories, the first time since 1997-2000. App State is now the only Sun Belt team with 10 conference wins.

How It Happened

App State jumped ahead early with 3-pointers from Jennings and Alonzo Dodd. Georgia Southern cut it to one, but Michael Marcus Jr.’s layup and Chad Moodie’s fastbreak basket built a five-point cushion. The Eagles never got closer than three points the rest of the way.

Georgia Southern hit a late first-half three to make it 47-43 at halftime. App State then dominated the second half, with Jennings, Luke Wilson’s alley-oop dunk, and contributions from Dodd and Marcus Jr. extending the lead to 18.

Top Performers

Jennings led all scorers with 31 points on 9-18 shooting and 10-11 from the free-throw line while grabbing six rebounds. Marcus Jr. delivered a 20-point, 10-rebound double-double—his third 20-point game of the season. Dodd added 18 points on 7-12 shooting.
